In vernacular the Hofkirche is also called "Black Men Church" Innsbruck - simply because 28-man-sized bronze statues watch the tomb of the emperor. Emperor Maximilian 1st wanted to be laid to rest here but on his deathbed he suddenly decided to be buried in St. George's Chapel in Vienna.
Essentially the Hofburg Innsbruck is the largest imperial monument in Europe – without an emperor! In addition to the magnificent (empty) emperor grave you find also find artistic tombs of Archduke Ferdinand and his wife Philippine Welser. Next to the Hofkirche the Tyrolean Folk Art Museum is, which preserves the most important art collection of the "old Tyrol".
